I read this great novel, The Road (Cormac McCarthy), and it makes me realize more that global warming could really be the end of this Earth if we don’t really do something serious about it.

The Road tells a story of how the Earth is like if human beings can’t stop the global warming. The air pollution blocks the sunlight from warming the Earth. No sunlight, the trees are decaying and can’t grow again. No trees mean not enough oxygen which all living creatures need. Animals are all extinct. The Earth is getting so cold, especially in winters. Can human beings survive with no food left? They eat one another until there’s nothing and no one left to be eaten.

It’s a story of a long journey a father and his son have to take, to find a place where the sun still loves. Is there such a place? They could be two of the last people in the dying Earth. Most of the time they walk the road in a freezing darkness and unbearable hunger, wearing a mask to filter the rotten air, avoiding other humans they rarely see, so terrified that other would eat them.

That can be happening in no time. If we care enough, we can stop it. Really. I always believe that we can help even from the smallest things.

I was reading this novel during a weekend away on small islands near Jakarta with some friends. The islands, the sea, the fish, and the coral reef are so beautiful. Yet, during that lovely time basking in the sun, playing in the water, eating fish, and just having fun, I couldn’t help feeling so sad. Garbage scattered everywhere, mostly around the island with many population. There is one island we went to which is so dirty and heavilly populated. The inhabitants throw the garbage near the beach, sometimes right to the sea, plus the bad smell this creates. How can they not care?

Have you done something good for our Earth?
